Barracuda stabs Italian to death
Wednesday, 11 February 2004
MALE, Feb 11 (HNS) -- An Italian man died Sunday when a barracuda stabbed
him in the chest.
Lauro Fraschi, 62, who has been living in the Maldives for 13 years, was
stabbed while fishing off his safari boat, Maakanaa Maldives, in Thaa
atoll.
It is not clear how Lauro, who is also owner of the diving school at Palm
Beach Resort, got attacked by the barracuda as he had not contacted his boat
afterwards.
The crew of the boat tried to take him to Thaa atoll Vilufushi island for
treatment, according to Giorgia Marazzi, the senior executive at the Italian
Consular Agency in Male.
She said that Lauro lost consciousness within five seconds after being
stabbed, and died within 10 minutes of the attack. At that time, they were
already on the way to Vilufushi.
Lauro was brought to Male on Sunday afternoon, whereby medical director of
the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital Dr. Fathimath Ali Didi pronounced that
he had received a massive shock after he was attacked by the barracuda.
Therefore, it is difficult to say that Lauro died from the barracuda wound,
Fathimath said.
Perhaps he died from the shock. The cause of his death can be confirmed
only after a postmortem, she said.
She did not give any details of the nature of the chest wound Lauro
received.
The Italian Consular Agency said that it was to send Lauros body to Milan
within two to three days.
